This leisure cycling itinerary between Milan and PAVIA offers a unique bike experience along
historic waterways and authentic Lombard landscapes. The tour starts from the Darsena in Porta Ticinese and follows a green route along the Navigli, including the evocative Naviglio Grande, passing through Abbiategrasso and the monastic village of Morimondo before reaching the historic centre of Pavia.
The tour is circular: after visiting Pavia, you ride back to Milan along the Naviglio Pavese, with an unmissable stop at the majestic Certosa di Pavia, a Renaissance masterpiece commissioned by Gian Galeazzo Visconti. Here you can admire important tombs, beautiful frescoes and the renowned cloister.

Milan’s historic canals, once essential for transporting goods thanks to hydraulic innovations by Leonardo Da Vinci, are now flanked by safe cycling paths that allow you to rediscover ancient trade routes. As you leave the city, the scenery becomes more rural, with fields, vegetable gardens and characteristic locks that reflect the area’s hydraulic history. Pavia, the ancient capital of the Lombard Kingdom and home to one of Italy’s oldest universities, fascinates with its medieval atmosphere, castles, hidden markets and impressive monastic complexes. Its iconic Duomo, with its bright Candoglia marble façade and striking Gothic design, stands as the symbol of this dynamic northern Italian metropolis.

The cycle route begins in Milan, along the final stretch of the historic Naviglio Grande, the oldest canal in the Milanese water system. Along the way you can admire the ingenious navigation locks, remarkable examples of hydraulic engineering. In Abbiategrasso, don’t miss the Convent of the Annunciation, and with a short detour into the centre you can explore the castle and the charming streets of the old town. The itinerary then heads south along the Bereguardo canal cycle path, where you can see the famous Ponte di Barche. The Cistercian abbey of Morimondo is a perfect place for a relaxing break
before reaching Pavia, where the final stretch of the Ticino River flows.

Today you can explore Pavia, discovering its medieval streets, the impressive Cathedral and the historic Visconteo Castle. A circular route allows you to reach the Po River, the longest waterway in Italy, which flows from Piedmont to the Adriatic Sea. You will cycle along a short yet evocative stretch of the river before returning to Pavia.

The cycle path begins along the Via Verde della Battaglia, an excellent example of a well-designed green corridor that links the magnificent Certosa di Pavia to the city centre. Following the scenic Naviglio Pavese, you will cycle all the way back to Milan.
