An unique experience in two charming towns

Milano-Abbiategrasso-Pavia

Milan and PAVIA, this leisure bike trip, a unique cycle experience, is dedicated to these two marvellous and fascinating Italian towns. The tour starts in Milan, you arrive at Pavia and then cycle back to Milan, following a green itinerary along the two main canals of the Lombard capital.

The route starts from the water basin Darsena di Porta Ticinese in Milan and leads, following the waters of the river for about 30 km, to the historic centre of the city of Pavia. It is a ring route that winds along the Naviglio Grande, it passes through the town of Abbiategrasso and past the monastery of Morimondo. On the last day, you return to Milan along the Naviglio Pavese. On the way back from Pavia to Milan, you will stop to admire the majestic and imposing Certosa di Pavia.

Milan is historically characterized by the presence of 3 channels that had made it the capital of water exchanges in northern Italy. Cycle paths have been recently created on the banks of these canals: in this way, you can go out of the city safely, in the same way retrace, and experience the ancient waterways. Moving away from Milan and the suburbs, the landscape becomes more and more rural, with numerous vegetable gardens and fields very close to the route.

You will then reach Pavia, the ancient capital of the Lombard Kingdom and home to one of the oldest universities in Italy, rich in historical places, some even hidden, such as the underground market.  The Visconti domination is clearly visible thanks to the castle and, as already mentioned, to the fantastic monastic complex of the Certosa di Pavia. On the way back from Pavia to Milan you will reach the square on which stands the majestic facade of the Certosa di Pavia, a Cistercian monastery and Sanctuary of the Beata Vergine Maria Madre, one of the most important monuments of the Italian Renaissance. The monument was commissioned by Gian Galeazzo Visconti in 1393 to celebrate the power of the Dukes of Milan.

Cycling lane along the Naviglio Pavese,

We recommend a visit to the Charterhouse where you can admire the grave of Ludovico il Moro and Beatrice D’Este. Of particular interest are the frescoes and the small cloister.

This short bike tour with a circular itinerary is a perfect proposal for a long weekend in history, culture, spirituality and good food: among the local products, a special mention to rice and excellent wines.

The four day tour has one night less in Pavia:
