The Leonardo Greenway
Milan – Trezzo d’Adda – Lecco
Along the Adda river is a the suggestive Leonardo Greenway cycle path. This is an easy cycle tour that starts in Milan, at the Navigli canals and ends in Lecco, on the shores of Lake Como. The route follows almost entirely bike paths surrounded by greenery. In addition to the intense green nature, this tour will also feature the blue of the lakes and the many waterways along the route, which exude ancient and recent history. Indeed, during these days of cycling, you will be able to admire glorious and elegant villas, ancient artifacts by the genius of Leonardo da Vinci, and, not to be overlooked, the breathtaking views of the rapids of the Adda River.
Definitely not to be missed is Leonardo’s Adda eco-museum, an open-air museum spanning the provinces of Milan, Bergamo and Lecco. Within this vast area you can admire valuable historical evidence: such as Celtic, Lombard and Roman vestiges, hydraulic works of the early medieval Benedictine reclamation, medieval and Renaissance castles, churches, shrines and hydroelectric power plants.
We also cannot fail to mention the splendid working-class town of Crespi d’Adda, considered the best- preserved working-class village in all of Europe. Founded in 1877 by Cristoforo Crespi alongside his textile industry, Crespi d’Adda has been on the UNESCO site list since 1995. The final destination of this wonderful tour will be the city of Lecco, which stands on a branch of Lake Como, the town of the `Promessi Sposi’, a famous work of the Italian writer Manzoni.
This itinerary is a perfect proposal for a long weekend in history, culture, spirituality and good food: among the local products, a special mention the risotto, cheeses of Valsassina and the delicious wines of Montevecchia.
