Cycling along the Adriatic Coast connects two regions The Marche and Abruzzo. San Benedetto del Tronto in the Marche region is the starting point of this tour full of nature reserves, old characteristic villages, many beaches, good food & wines, and deep-rooted traditions such as fishing from the Trabocco. All this is always accompanied by the sound of the sea and breathtaking panoramic views!
The routes are on unpaved roads through NATURE RESERVES of ABRUZZO, where the biodiversity is intact and well preserved. 130 km of cycle paths have been built along the coast that connects the Adriatic seaside resorts. Don’t forget your bathing suit, because there are several possibilities to take refreshing baths while cycling. It is also a tour of eno-gastronomic delights. The refreshing wines from this region are tasted.
Ortona with its Aragon’s castle from the XV century is worth a visit and then the famous coast of the Trabocchi is reached.
The Trabocchi resemble ancient spiders hanging high above the sea. They are imposing wooden structures that hang a few meters above the sea and in the past guaranteed the fishermen a constant income even in winter. An unforgettable experience will be dinner on a Trabocco. The trip ends with a visit to the Loggia Amblingh in Vasto, which offers a nice view of the old village center, which has an interesting history and culture. Many churches and museums can be visited. A tasty conclusion is the fish soup Brodetto alla Vastese, a unique culinary experience, one of its kind.

Departure from San Benedetto del Tronto through the Sentina Natural Reserve, in a landscape characterized by water and sand that extends over approximately 180 hectares. After crossing the river Tronto, the Abruzzo cycle path begins, passing the seaside resorts of Martinsicuro, Alba Adriatica, Tortoreto Lido, Giulianova and the beach of Cologna. Then the route enters the Borsacchio Reserve, which protects the untouched beauty of a natural area. Here we find a real coastal landscape, with sand dunes, a vegetation of various salt plants and extensive typical Mediterranean scrub. Today’s ride ends in Roseto degli Abruzzi.

Today the route passes through the Pineto pine forest and the Torre Di Cerrano Marine Park. In the area of Teramo, between the two municipalities of Pineto and Silvi, the park includes 7 kilometers of coastline and is part of a program to protect and improve underwater oases. The protection of this area in recent years has allowed for repopulation and contributed to a study of the marine ecosystem. The next province is that of Pescara and you continue passing Montesilvano and Pescara itself. After the bicycle and pedestrian Ponte del Mare you reach Francavilla al Mare. In the afternoon, there is a tasting at a winery as an aperitif and a Pizza Party accompanied by excellent beer follows this.

After breakfast back in the saddle, the ride continues southwards, crossing the vast area of the Chieti province. You will cycle along the coast and visit beautiful Ortona with the Aragon’s castle. Then back to the coast and along the sea to the Acquabella Reserve. You will pass the Canadian Cemetery, which is on the site of the original Gustav Line of World War II. A maze of tunnels follows until you arrive at San Vito Chietino, the gateway to the Costa dei Trabocchi. Finally, you can see these old fishermen’s constructions, which look like huge spiders hanging over the sea water. Continuing along the Teatina coast with a view of the surrounding hills, you arrive in Fossacesia. For the early risers, a unique experience is to see a sunrise from under a Trabocco. It’s time to say goodbye to the Costa dei Trabocchi and the final leg of the journey begins once again in the saddle. The ride continues south and you will cycle on gravel roads through the most evocative part of the entire trip, the area of the Punta Aderci and Punta Penna Reserves. The coast here resembles an almost Scottish landscape with a magical view of the sea. You will pass well-known historic Trabocchi up to the Gulf of Vasto, where this tour of the Abruzzo below the Loggia Amblingh, from where you can even catch a glimpse of the Tremiti Islands on clear days. The old town of Vasto is dominated by the castle, churches, views and beautiful buildings. The evening ends with a typical culinary experience, the fish soup brodetto alla Vastese.
