The Salzkammergut, this cycling tour takes you to one of the most incredible regions in Austria. A perfect place for a holiday enjoying lakes and mountains. The SALZKAMMERGUT region is a popular holiday destination in Austria, stretching from Salzburg to the Dachstein mountains. It is home to 76 lakes, some well known for their lakeside towns such as St. Wolfgang, Mondsee and Gmunden, while other lakes are secluded and hidden. The name Salzkammergut means ‘Salt Mine Estate’ and comes from the Imperial Salt Chamber, the authority in charge of managing the precious salt mines of the Habsburg Empire. Your route will take you over mountains, lakes, forests, and nature parks. “There is no more beautiful country in our time …” says an old folk song. Well, no other landscape can interpret this folk song as literally as the Austrian Salzkammergut.
Certainly, Salzkammergut belongs to one of the special treasures of this world, UNESCO and the Hallstatt region have also recognized such uniqueness has been awarded UNESCO Natural and Cultural Heritage status. What could be more pleasant than cycling along the shores of the lakes, and letting your soul flow in the wonderfully unspoiled countryside and for a refreshing dip in the hot season?
A tour through the Salzammergut will show you the World Heritage site of Hallstatt, the imperial town of Bad Ischl, and wonderful lakes and valleys.
A wonderful cycling day will be in Ausseerland, where you will cross a landscape resembling alpine pastures with high mountains all around. Between delightful small lakes and an old town called Bad Aussee. One of the highlights will be the city of Mozart, Salzburg with its old town, fortress, and many restaurants and shops.
The daily program of the 8-day tour
Individual arrival at your hotel. Tour documents will be handed over by reception, if you have not booked for a briefing.
You will follow the cycle trail along the lake to the Mozart village of St. Gilgen and on to Lake Mondsee. Afterwards you will partly follow the former railway tracks to Salzburg. The cycle tour ends with a 10 km long descent to Salzburg with free view to the mountains around Salzburg. The route is not long, so there is plenty of time to see this beautiful city. A walk through the old town will take you past the Baroque cathedral and the Salzburg Glockenspiel with 35 bells, which can be heard every day. The Hohensalzburg fortress, towering over the city, invites you to visit and then, of course, there is Mozart’s birthplace. Finally, you can sit on a terrace at the famous Residenzplatz square.

With the train, you will leave the city of Salzburg and start the cycle tour in Oberhofen. First, you will pass the romantic lake of Irrsee, then you reach the famous little city of Mondsee, where the wedding of Sound of Music took place. You will continue following the cycle path along the Lake Mondsee to the Attergau or to Lake Attersee. The Attergau shows you the countryside just a little bit off the tourist lake region with meadows and gardens.

You will follow the lakeside road along Lake Attersee and cycling to the next beautiful Lake Traunsee. Enjoy the wonderful lakeside city of Gmunden with the sea castle of Orth. The castle on Lake Orth can be reached via a 123-metre-long wooden bridge and is one of the oldest buildings in the Salzkammergut. Afterwards you will cycle along the Traunsee Lake passing the historic village of Traunkirchen to Ebensee.

You will follow the Traun River upwards to the emperor city of Bad Ischl, where you should visit the Emperor Villa and the famous Zauner pastry shop. In the afternoon you continue following the Traun River along the historic brine pipeline trail, salt has always been an important raw material of the Salzkammergut region and a strong economic resource. You will cycle on to the village of Bad Goisern, which is also well known for its handicrafts.

With the train, you will go to Tauplitz, the highest point of the tour, where you will find a wide valley with mountain ranges on both sides. Enjoy cycling mostly downhill cycling through meadows and alpine pastures. Depending on your fitness, you may either cycle over a little mountain pass to Lake Grundlsee or you follow the river cycle trail to Bad Aussee. The last part of the trail leads you along the river passing the nature reserve of Koppenvalley. If the train is not running, you will cycle to Hallstatt/return!

With the ferry you will cross the lake and follow the lovely cycle trail along the lake Hallstatt.
Afterwards you will follow the Traun River to Bad Ischl.
Along the former Roman road, you will cycle to the Wolfgangsee lake.

Impressions of the Salzkammergut

You cycle through a landscape of rolling hills. This generally not-too-difficult route with short daily distances makes it an ideal tour for leisure cyclists,… but some cycling experience is required, as there are several not-too-severe climbs to tackle, especially between the lakes. Most of the cycling is on cycle paths and quiet country roads. Average physical fitness is required.
