Dobbiaco-Lienz-Berg im Drautal-Spittal am Drau-Villach-Ossiacher See-Klagenfurt
The Drau cycle path is undoubtedly one of the most spectacular routes in Europe. This bike tour from the Dolomites to the Corinthian lakes is ideal for families and beginners. This special tour encounters several lakes where you can have a refreshing swim or just relax on the lake banks enjoying the sun. The cycle path starts at the source of the River Drava (Drau), near Dobbiaco (Toblach) where this tour starts. Dobbiaco is a mountain village with a beautiful backdrop of the Dolomite Mountains. The village much visited both in summer by lovers of hiking and cycling as in winter by skiers. Here it was where the composer Mahler found inspiration during his summer holidays in 1908-1910: “It is wonderful to be here, it sets your soul and body at ease…”
The River Drava accompanies you on the way passing the border Italy- Austria cycling to Lienz (673 a.s.l.) the town of two castles: Bruck castle with its town museum and Tammerburg castle used for concerts. From here the tour takes you through Spittal and you continue cycling till Villach. Close to Villach, we find two natural paradises, the deep blue Faaker lake with its island in the middle and the bigger Ossiacher lake. From Villach you make a stunning ring tour around Ossiacher See.
The next day you continue cycling passing another famous lake, Wörther See before reaching the end goal Klagenfurt, capital of the region Carinthia. There is a lot to see and enjoy the local delicacies in one of the restaurants on the Alter Platz, the vibrant heart of the town.
The tour has also a shorter version 6 days that finish in Villach.

Individual arrival at your first hotel is in the Alta Pusteria Valley. For those arriving earlier, it is well worth cycling into the Höhlenstein Valley to visit Lake Toblach or the courageous can go to the Adventure park in Dobbiaco. It is also possible to visit the Gustav Mahler Wild Animal Park.
Overnight stay with breakfast in Dobbiaco or Villabassa
Starting in Villabassa or Dobbiaco, you cycle along the bike path to Innichen (San Candido) and then on to Sillian, a paradise for who loves active and nature holidays. After this, the route goes downhill all the way to the sunny Austrian town of Lienz, situated on the sunny side of the Alps.
Attractions for families: Wichtelpark at Sillian, Loacker ‘World of Goodness’ at Heinfels, Galitzenklamm, Alpine Coaster “Osttirodler” and Petting zoo.

Distance: 50-55 km / 31-34,2 mi
You leave from where the Isel flows into the Drau and continue along the bike path to Oberdrauburg (Perchten and Alm museums and old mill). After Oberdrauburg you cycle through splendid scenery along an important Roman trade route till Berg im Tal.

From Berg, you pass through idyllic scenery and dreamy villages en route to Spittal/Drau. There is the possibility of taking a detour to Lake Millstätter for a quick swim or a short rest. Spittal is famous for the concerts and comedy shows held at Porcia Castle, one of the most beautiful Renaissance castles in Austria and well worth a visit.

This day’s cycling takes you to Villach, the largest town in Carinthia. Villach, a quiet small town, so it is easy to get around on foot, is well known not only for its carnival events but also for its funfair. There are many places of interest to visit like the Landskron Castle with its falconry, the bell-tower of St. Jakob and the museum of Doll-Art… and of course, there are many boutiques, pubs, and restaurants. A trip to the local lake Faaker is also worthwhile and the nearby Monkey mountain with 145 Japanese Macaques that move freely in the whole park.

Follow the River Seebach leaving the town of Villach. The remains of Landskron castle will soon appear reigning majestically over the countryside. Shortly afterward you will reach Lake Ossiacher which lies idyllically amid the mountains. The clear warm water invites you to stop and have a swim before returning to Villach.

For the first few kilometers follow the Drau through countryside that has kept its natural, uncontaminated charm. On reaching the famous Lake Wörther (Wörthersee) there is plenty of fun for all ages with sandy beaches, boats for hire and trips around the lake, so have a break here for a while before continuing the tour to Klagenfurt. In the evening you can enjoy a walk around the romantic old town centre and discover its Austrian charm.

Easy difficulty This tour is ideal for beginners and families. The route mainly you alongside the River Drau and there are no steep inclines. The bicycle paths are well marked, mostly asphalted, and without traffic. Children need to have a cycle experience.
